Fantasy cricket - with Beckenham & Sydenham players the stars!
|
|
Beckenham & Sydenham CC is happy to bring you online fantasy cricket! Think our overseas pro will rack up the wickets for the firsts? It'll cost £600 to get him. Seen a talent you think will pile on the runs for the Merlins? Think you can pick up a bargain? Based on last years performances people have been valued from £25 through to £650. You have £2,400 to buy as many (or as few) players as you like. Players from all five senior teams will be available for selection
Points are awarded as follows:
| Runs |
1 point per run |
| Wickets |
20 points |
| Catches |
10 points |
| Stumpings |
15 points |
Entry is £10 payable in cash at the club (the online payment process is a work in progress) and prizes will be dictated by the amount of funds raised – hopefully 1st place will be over £100.
The more of us who enter – the bigger the rewards for winning! I would certainly hope that most regular players would be keen to select a side.
There will be payouts for the top three, plus two spot prizes. These will go to the cricketer who generates most points in any one game on set
weekends. But you have to be playing the game to win the prize! The top scorer who is in the game will take the spot prize.
League stats, for last year and the season so far are accessible online here:
And moving forward the Sunday teams will be putting their results on Play-Cricket too so it will be easy to keep a track of people for the transfer window in early/mid July.
If there are any players missing from the fantasy list - please email Dave Bryan (D_P_Bryan@hotmail.com) with details and he will update.
Best of luck all, you have until noon on 24th May to enter, so get cracking, select a side and stick an extra £10 in the wallet this weekend to make your entry. |

From the Chairman: BSCC Season 2008
Cricket Saturday 19 April
This weekend sees the season commence with a 1st Team friendly vs. Banstead on Saturday at Foxgrove road at 1.30pm, Chris Isles who has agreed to carry on as 1st team skipper will be selecting the side, however its certainly worth while letting me know if you are available for a game as there may be one or two spots available. Any support would be most welcome as well.
More BSCC success
We've already heard about the winter success of Brent and Blakey but Johan Malcolm too has already been the runs this season having sadly just missed out on his maiden fist class century falling for 93 against Surrey playing for Loughborough UCCE on the weekend (you can watch some highlights of Yogi in action here). In addition, Oli Howick has been working hard pre-season with the Leeds UCCE first class squad and is hopeful of making his first class bow shortly.
And, lets not forget our first Team scorer Peter Wiseman, who has been selected to score for the MCC vs. Cambridge University at Fenners.
Director of Junior Coaching
I am delighted to announce that Matt Grice has been appointed Director of Junior Coaching, Matt will work alongside senior coaches Brent Arnel and Dan Grice running all the coaching sessions as well as managing all our coaches in looking after our 200+ junior members. This year we should have upwards of 10 fully qualified coaches and as I have mentioned often in the past if anybody is keen to do coaching badges the club would be delighted to cover the costs for these and put you through the badges. Indeed all offers of help to work with the Junior teams on match days and at training sessions would be gratefully received.
Club Mark Accreditation & Club Development Officer
Mark Edwards and Chris Whitaker have put in a Herculean effort to ensure that we have completed all our ‘Club mark’ application documentation and with the club mark assessment due very shortly I very much look forward to being in a position to announce our successful application shortly. Once this is complete the club can become a ‘Regional Focus’ club and hopefully start seeking funding and support of projects we wish to drive forward in order to improve all our facilities. Just to give you an indication of how big this could be for the club, Orpington CC have just been awarded £28k to relay their square whilst Old Wilsonians CC have a request for £150k funding currently under consideration. Sadly Mark due to work commitments and in Chris' case a move, will be stepping down once the accreditation is achieved. Therefore we are looking for volunteer(s) to join the committee as the Club Development Officer, working closely in unison with the junior committee, borough and county development boards as well as the ECB to help drive forward these funding projects for the club. If ever there was a job where the benefit of your work is obvious, this is it. Please put your hand up to help, if you can offer any support whatsoever.
Cricket Saturday 27 April/Sunday 28 April & Training
For those of you not involved in the game this weekend we will have full round of fixtures next weekend and club training will start at foxgrove on Tuesday 22 April running from 6pm onwards, all will be welcome. Training will also run on Thursdays as well with Brent Arnel managing both sessions. Given the inclement weather of the last few weeks, it is unlikely we will have use of the grass nets until early May, so practice will be on the artificial nets in the main.
Club Dinner & Junior Registration Evening
If you prefer to wait a little longer to get the whites out of the bag I still urge you to support the club by attending our Junior Cricket registration evening this Friday at the club form 7pm onwards as well as getting your tickets booked for the pre-season dinner on Friday 25th at foxgrove where guest speaker Dave Fulton will be in action. Please please confirm if you will be attending – cheques for £35pp payable to “Beckenham Cricket Club” and sent to Graham Watts at the club or given to myself, Jeff Pitcher or Peter Wiseman.
Heres to a wonderful summer of cricket,
Billy

Brent Arnel returns for 2008

|
As some of you may have already heard, Brent will be coming back for a second season with Beckenham & Sydenham CC. Brent was outstanding in 2007 in both his performances with the ball in the first team and with his efforts in coaching the juniors. I'm sure everyone will be pleased to see him back.
Brent returns on the back of a great summer for Northern Districts in New Zealand where he is the leading wicket taker in the State Championship at the end of the preliminary rounds and has also won the Deloitte Domestic Player of the Month for March (click here for the full story), taking 26 wickets at 17 in the last 4 matches.
Brent arrives on April 18 and will be hoping to continue that form into the English summer. Lets hope Heathrow's tremendous new Terminal 5 doesn't misplace his bowling boots! |

Alex Blake called into England U19s

|
With James Harris (Glamorgan) unavailable for the England U19 team, having been selected for the Glamorgan first XI v’s Oxford UCCE, Beckenham & Sydenham CC's Alex Blake has been called up as a replacement.
Alex finished 2007 on a high playing 3 games for Kent in the pro40 competition and also won the Kent Cricket League 'Young Player of the Year Award'. He has just returned from Australia where he spent the winter playing in Perth for WASTCA club Balcatta where he scored just under 900 runs at a shade under 50 and took 27 wickets in all competitions.
Congratulations Blakey. |

Natwest Cricket Force 2008: Contribute to your Club

|
With the cricket season rapidly approaching preparations are being made to get everything in order to make sure we have a successful and thoroughly enjoyable season. As such we are intending to take part in the Natwest Cricket Force weekend on 5-6 April 2008 (or 12/13 April subject to volunteer availability), which is an attempt by clubs around the country to encourage cricket supporters, their friends and families to give something back to their local community cricket club by volunteering to undertake works at the club or provide funding. |
The link below shows some of the great success that other clubs have had in previous years and we are very keen to run similar events on an annual basis.
www.ecb.co.uk/ecb/cricketforce
If members could spare any time to get involved with a number of planned activities to take the load of Ray our groundsman such as painting the sight boards and the scorebox as well as generally tidying up the place please let me know ASAP. Those of you who have been the club recently will no doubt have appreciated the tremendous efforts of the band of volunteers who painted the bar and I'm very hopeful the cricket section can drive something similar forward.
The cricket force projects have great scope in the future and this year represents a great opportunity for us to get involved so any and all offers of help would be greatly appreciated, some refreshments will be provided as well.
I look forward to your response.
Best regards,
Billy

BSCC
AGM:
Monday 14th January 2008: 7:30pm
Just a reminder to you all that the BSCC AGM will be held next Monday 14th January 2007 at 19.30 in the long room at Foxgrove Road.
Click here for a copy of the agenda.
As always the attendance of the membership is vital on these occasions and especially so this year in light of the failure to secure agreement with Sydenham sports club for the hire of the ground for the 2008 season.
Despite the fact that the club was very keen to continue the activities & relationship at Cricket Lane the extensive and exhaustive discussions for next years hire eventually broke down as a result of non-agreement over various costs and management issues.
Despite any rumour to the contrary there is no subsequent de-merger as both Beckenham CC and Sydenham CC cricket sections remain amalgamated under the BSCC banner based at Foxgrove Road, with league positions and all other associated memberships intact. Although I appreciate that the loss of Sydenham Sports Club facilities may be disappointing for some members I assure you that BSCC is still heading very much in the right direction.
The committee has been working furiously to ensure that all members will be continue to be offered facilities matching those that they have become accustomed to and we are delighted to have formed new partnerships with the Kent County Ground (Worsley bridge road), Dulwich College (Trevor Bailey ground) as well as Sydenham Girls school, which with increased use at Foxgrove will allow us to comfortably host all of our Senior and Junior teams.
The last few years have seen some wonderful progress for our cricket club and much planning has already gone into implementing a structure that will continue to improve our offering, so I hope many of you will be at the AGM on Monday to offer your input to help to continue driving us forward in what promises to be a very exciting time for the club on and off the pitch.
Best regards,
Billy
Chairman BSCC

BSCC Cricket 2007 Season: 'About the club' Update,
Open jobs
As
you know the season is fast approaching and I am happy to say
we are looking in good shape for the upcoming season. With the
ashes and World cup generating interest Winter nets have been
well attended and I am particularly encouraged by the number of
new players who have been there regularly. There are still 4 weeks
left at Dulwich before we head outside so I hope that even more
of you will dust of the kit and join us before we commence our
outdoor programme towards the middle/end of April, I will confirm
pre-season details later.
The
committee have been hard at work over the off season and I am
delighted to say we have appointed new Sponsorship and Membership
co-ordinators in Adrian Thomas and Jeff Pitcher, so if you have
any ideas on this front please get in touch with those guys ASAP.
I can announce that we have signed a deal with Green King IPA
to sponsor the senior playing sides. Whilst Sharp Focus are onboard
to sponsor the Junior Section.
In
addition the committee welcomes Chris Whitaker who will be the
Junior Committee Representative acting as liaison with the newly
formed Junior committee (chaired by Mark Edwards). It has taken
a whole committee to replace Dennis Grice who I am sure you will
all join me in thanking for his sterling work with the junior
section over the years. Chris has also been working hard to gain
our CLUB MARK accreditation and we are hopeful that we will have
that signed off shortly, highlighting our commitment to welfare,
safety and our junior section in general.
There
remains however some open positions on the committee which I am
looking for volunteers to fill
Junior
Co-Coordinator; A Senior cricket club member to help out with
Junior section Committee in particular to offer that extra cricket
knowledge amongst a committee of parent volunteers who have already
taken on responsibility for all the admin in terms of match managing,
fixtures, social, publicity, league reps, play cricket reps
3rd
Team Captain: It is essential that we have someone in place
before the seasons starts, with new members and returning players
from last years 3rd & 4th team squads I envisage a very positive
campaign of the 3rd team. If you would be interested again please
let me know
Hopefully
you will all have seen details from James Evans regarding the
new kit for the season so we will look the part as well, if you
havent ordered yet get your orders in now, my thanks to James
for all his hard work.
If
you have any questions about the upcoming season or feel you can
help in any way please contact me. I will be in touch again before
the outdoor season starts!
Cheers,

Winter Nets
Just
a brief reminder that Senior Winter Indoor Cricket Nets start
this Wednesday 31st January at Duwlich College, running between
19.30-21.00, immediately following Junior nets.
As usual a small fee will be charged and as usual all are welcome.
A similar structure to last year will be in place with 4 net lanes
run to cater for practice for all levels of player.
As we will only be running 3 Saturday league sides this year I
am hopeful that competition for places will be high and I am sure
all the team skippers will be keen to get as many players as possible
attending. If you have any friends who may also be keen to get
involved please invite them along also, they will be more than
welcomed.
Hopefully see many of you at Dulwich on Wednesday

Errrr,
hello again!!! :o)
Regular
visitors to these fine pages may have noticed a brief interruption
to the service. Totally and utterly my fault Im afraid (although
our wonderful ISP havent exactly helped). Didnt pay
the bill simple as that!
So
whats been going on so far this season? Chuffing rain -
thats whats been going on.
The
first XI have had a steady start, an incomplete against
newly promoted Tunbridge Wells after making 275-4, a winning draw
at Folkestone and a wash out against Bexley. Theyve also
started well in the Evening Standard comfortably beating Weybridge
from the Surrey Premier League, the game was notable for the fact
it lashed down all day giving us 2 hopes of playing any cricket,
Bob and No. Still Islesy, standing in
magnificently for Bedders, called perfectly as the coin spiralled
up into the murk at the the newly created Weybridge CC boating
lake.
Its
been a tough start for the twos but a magnificent 159no from the
Matthew Smirnoff Grice has to be a highlight. There
has also been good runs from El Tel whos a daddy
McDowell and Ian Jordans Landscapes. Early season wickets
from Adam Row-land (its a Grange Hill thing) have also shown
the kind of form that will need to be continued.
Other
notable performance have come from Richie Edwards in the 4s with
101* v the outrageously named - Blackheath City of London Wanderers
2nd XI. Dom Murtagh (as always) has had the runs for the Merlins,
but hes OK now. Darth has also been using the force for
the Wizards and light-sabered his way to 60 against
Addiscombe.
So
keep an eye out for further updates! If you have anything that
you think should or shouldnt be here let us know at webmaster@beckenham-sydenhamcc.co.uk

Happy
new year
Its
that time of year again, Winter nets will commence on Wednesday
1st Feb at Dulwich college between 19.30-21.00, immediately following
Junior nets. As usual a small fee will be charged and as usual
all are welcome.
In
fact the new committee and the new skippers in particular are
extremely keen that as many as possible do attend. Additionally
if you have any friends keen to get involved please invite them
along. We are keen to recruit as many new players as possible
this season and will also be co-ordaining a programme to do such,
hence new members are very welcome.
Two
more points of admin. Firstly overseas players. Garry Sheen will
not be our overseas player for the 2006 season due to injury and
your committee has been working to secure a replacement. If anybody
would be able to accommodate an overseas player please let me
know as this will alter our scope. If I do not get a swift affirmative
response to this email I will assume that nobody can help.
Finally
we are looking for somebody to join the committee to co-ordinate
application for Kent Foucs qualification. Nationwide there is
£50million availble for youth cricket development but that
is only availble for Focus clubs, if the club is to move forward
we must get this accrediatation, which amongst other things, requires
a 10 year development blueprint, and a senior and junior coaching
set up. Please volunteer to help if this is an area you feel you
can help with.
See
you at Dulwich in a few weeks time,
Billy - 07866 437 371

BSCC
AGM: Tuesday 29th November 2005
The
BSCC AGM will be held in the Long Room at Foxgrove Road on Tuesday
29th November, starting at 19.30 promptly. Click here to download the agenda. I must stress how important it is that
turnout is good. Considering the difficulties we had running sides
in the final few weeks of last season it is essential that we
as a club all come together to discuss the situation and solutions
and put into place officers who will implement such.
I
can assure you that the merged club has every intention on continiung
to operate the two grounds and in a similar league set up, thus
support from all members at all levels, regardless of which ground
you play your cricket is vital.
I
will send a further reminder the week before the meeting but please
put this date in your diary and make every effort to attend.
BSCC
Club Dinner: Friday 25th November 2005
As
usual we are proposing an end of season cricket dinner, unfortunately
the Cricket Lane venue is booked up for all the Fridays which
were considered viable. As such we have provisionally booked the
long room at Foxgrove road on Friday 25th November. I need your
feedback as to whether we should proceed with this, so please email ASAP with you availability/likelihood of attendance. It is possible
we may also look into a pre-season dinner at Sydenham before the
commencement of next season as well.
Cheers,
Billy

No
prize on offer - other than tragic geek of the week, - but spot
the deliberate mistake below....
[09.08.2005]
Wow.
Don't know about you but I'm still recovering from Sunday morning.
The
sunday morning at the end of cricket week is painful at the best
of times. This year however, the fog filled head, the mouth like
Ghandi's flip-flop, and the wallet suffering the ravages of a
mauling from the beer monkey, also had to put up with Englands
nerve wracking win over the Aussies at Edgbaston. Certainly the
best test match I can remember, (being only 6 years old and living
in Delaware, Pennsylvania at the time, 1981 and all that gubbins
kind of passed me by).
Anyway,
well done England and fingers crossed for the rest of the series,
but back to matters closer to home. An excellent win for the 1s
this weekend away at Folkestone, including fine 1 not out from
Nevil Wharton. A winning draw for the 2s against Lordswood including
a welcome return to form from James Evans with 110 and 60 from
brother David, (he's not actually a monk, oh you know what I mean
- its something in the genes anyway!). The 3s had a losing draw
against Bromley Town which included a debut senior half century
(I think) from William McVicar, no doubt the first of many. The
4s had a tight, low scoring win over Wilmington with captain fantastic
Mike Konold leading the way with 33.
As
for cricket week...
Monday
v the Stoics. A poor start to the cricket week festivities for
the club being bowled out for 139 (Jerry "the pitbull"
Pitblado 23, O Hameed 21) in reply to the Stoics 188-7 dec. The
Stoics innings included figures of 3-1 for W McVicar the "3"
being a hat-trick.
Tuesday
v Barbados Overseas. B&SCC batting first made 135ao including
47no from Mark Dawson, which BOCA chased easily losing 6 wickets
in the process.
Wednesday
v Addiscombe. Addiscombe fielded a pretty tidy side here, and
after inflicting a fair old drubbing on B&SCC in the main
fixture - going past BSCCs 123 for just the loss of 2 wickets,
a beer match twenty20 was hastily organised. Certainly the smallest
and probably the youngest player I have seen at Foxgrove bowled
very tidily indeed and was desperately unlucky not to pick up
the walking wicket Webster first ball.
Thursday
v The Woodcutters. The Woodcutters posted a respectable 212-9
(which did however include 3 run-outs). B&SCC rompted to victory
with 74 from Dom Murtagh, 50 from Dawson (I am unreliably informed
the last 4 took 1 hour) and 46no from Darcy including a 6 on Foxgrove
Road to win the match.
Friday
v MCC. B&SCC bat first and make a mamoth 293-4 in 45 overs
with a ton from A Ellis, C Anderson 79* and 62 from the Sheenbar.
The boys from headquarters did not fair too well chasing being
dismissed for 126 with "lil" Lewie taking 3 for 20.
Several
people have asked me for more player profiles. I agree. Send me
the photos and your lookalike ideas and I'll sort it.

[18.07.2005] - sorry it's been a while since my last update!
Primary
Club of England Vs Primary Club of Australia
- THIS WEDNESDAY 20th JULY
You
may be interested in a game of cricket this Wednesday, to be played
at Beckenham Cricket Club, Foxgrove Road between the Primary Club
of England (captained by Derek Underwood) and the Primary Club
of Australia. This is the first meeting of the two clubs since
1982, and marks the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Primary
Club (a charity benefitting the blind), formed at the club on
the event of four members getting out first ball during a game.
Entry is a £10 donation, there will also be a BBQ and some
fairly decent cricketers on show Rodney
Hogg, Ross
Edwards for a start and we're hoping for some serious
moustaches too. All proceeds will go to the Primary Club - see
below for details. Play starts at 11.30am, and should continue
until around 7.30pm. All are welcome, and it should be a fantastic
day out.
The
Juniors are on fire!
Not
literally, obviously (I hope). The U11s have won the North Kent
Junior League U11B Division. Great work fellas. There will be
more info on this shortly hopefully with some words of wisdom
from the "Jose Mourinho" of Beckenham & Sydenham
- Chris Whitaker, the other junior sides are also more than holding
their own and again further reports are to follow. But as for
the U11s, congratulations to all the players on securing the league
title last friday night! They took on a big challenge of playing
their last two league games on the same evening but with a good
squad and a lot of help from Paul Martin, managed to pull off
a win at Chislehurst and a narrow defeat against Old Wilsonians.
Without wanting to sound like a Gywneth Paltrow acceptance speech...Chris
would like to thank all the coaching staff of Garry Sheen, Matt
Grice and Jeremy Pitblado at B&SCC and the Chairman of the
Colts Section Dennis Grice for all the effort they put into running
a terrific colts section. Plus of course all the parents who help
out each week with scoring, transport and organisation......

Primary
Club
A
quick note from Andrew Dixon - Primary Club Trustee.
May
I just remind you all about the Primary Club.
The
Primary Club is a Cricketers Charity that started at Beckenham
50 years ago. You can see information about the Club on the board
in the lobby. It distributes approximately £150,000 each
year to organisations around the country which are involved in
providing sporting opportunities to the blind and visually impaired.

In
the Primary Club's Golden Jubilee year, it would be wonderful
if many of the present playing membership joined a very
worthwhile cause. For £20, you gain membership and
a tie. There is a Dinner at Lord's on July 18th and, of
course, the alternative "Test" Match at Foxgrove
on July 20th, adverts about which are around the Club House. |
There
are application forms behind the bar and the HonSec/First Xl Scorer
will be happy to provide more information! I do hope many of you
will consider that this is a good time to join.
All good wishes for your cricket this summer.

they do.

Have
you paid your subs?
It's
that time of year again. You should buy now have paid your subs
if not please do so as soon as possible. There are now several
ways to do this, cheque, direct debit or simply use your card
when you're next at the club. If you want to set up a direct debit
you can download the mandate form here,
or go to the membership section to view the options and prices.
Being
a bit slow I found it all quite confusing (I'm sure I won't be
alone) so to explain.....As a full adult playing member I pay
£188. This breaks down as £50 basic membership, £130
adult playing supplement and £8 cricket affliation fees.
If
cricket is not your "first" sport at the club (ie your're
a squash or hockey member too) you may not need to pay the basic
membership. Any questions, please contact Graham
Watts in the General Office (020 8650 0266).
If
you are still confused, go have a small lie down.

Player
Profiles
You
may or may not have noticed that Isley has been busy on the Player
Profile section which is now up and running! Have a
look and think about your team mates. Send any photos of players
and potential lookalikes to Duncs or Isley. Any complaints about
lookalikes will be considered and more than likely ignored! ;o)

The
new season is here!
The cricket season is commencing in earnest for BSCC this
weekend and judging from indoor nets many of you are chomping
at the bit to get going. Assuming the weather smiles upon us this
weekend we have 2 pre-season friendlies on Saturday against Three
Bridges and the first round in the National Cup on Sunday.
Training
commences this Thursday at Foxgrove road as soon after 6pm as
you can get there and come rain or shine we will be meeting up
for practice of one kind or another.
An
interest in extra fixtures for the third and fourth team has been
expressed and if enough of you are keen we will see what we can
do but first and foremost we must fulfil the three fixtures we
already have arranged.
Finally
let me take this opportunity to wish you all a very successful
season at BSCC and I look forward to seeing many of you at the
club on Thursday evening.
