Name: Derek Underwood
DOB: 08.06.1945
AKA: Deadly
Stats: Click here
When cricket talk broaches the subject of rain affected pitches, Derek Underwood's name is never far behind. He was just 21 when first selected for England eventually playing 86 test matches. 297 Wickets at 25.83 speak for itself.

Born in neighbouring Bromley in 1945 "Deadly" played club cricket for Beckenham in the 50s and 60s and can still be occasionally seen playing for the "Primary Club" - of which he has been president, during cricket week.

Underwood's ability to vary his pace to suit the conditions is well documented and probably his finest hour predictably came on a wet one at the Oval in 1968. After appearing to be saved by the weather Underwood reduced the Australians from 110 for 6 to 125 all out in half an hour on the final day, drawing the series.

At 17 Underwood became the youngest player in history to take 100 first-class wickets in his first season. He achieved this feat on 9 further occasions in a county career spanning 25 years, and in 1966 took a remarkable 157 wickets. He was awarded the MBE in 1981.
