Richard
Ellison formed a formidable new ball partnership at Beckenham
in the 70s with Peter Wharton. He made his Test debut in the
1984 Oval Test where he took five wickets in defeat against
the all conquering West Indians. The following year Ellison
playing in the fifth Ashes Test claimed ten wickets in the match,
three of them on the fourth evening as Australia crumbled to
37 for 5. The key wicket was Allan Border, who stretched forward
but was befuddled by Ellison's late breakback. The ball just
clipped the bails, and the danger man was gone.
Ellison's lack of real pace, and injury problems meant he was not as effective
overseas or in England again. Ellison had a brief renaissance
in 1988 taking 71 county championship wickets for Kent, before
retiring at the comparatively early age of 33. Richard was named
one of the Wisden cricketers of the year in 1986. |
